Bolt Mountain and MTR

This post is just to show mountaintop removal coal mining in relation to Ivy Knob on Bolt Mountain. Ivy Knob is the highest point in the Guyandotte Mountain Range at just over 3,200 feet.

For a closer look at the surface mine you can check out this view and this one.

Interesting view. Where exactly was this picture taken from? Is this close to Route 99?

It was taken from the head of Miller’s Fork which is the left hand fork in the head of Peachtree. It’s about 5 miles from 99.

It is a damn shame how MTR ruins the beauty of the mountains. I moved from the area in 1987 before MTR was a factor… it looks totally different now.

I hate it. It is almost unbearable to stay here and watch it happen but to me it would be like giving up on the mountains to leave now.

Denny~ALL your photos are absoultely AMAZING & BREATH~TAKING!! You are SO right, when you tell people that even as wonderful {my choice of word) as the pictures are, There can never really be no justice done as to what the eye can behold on Bolt Mtn., Drew’s Creek, Peachtree and WV period. No place else on earth can compare. Remember about 2 weeks ago, I told ya my knees felt like they were buckling on me, when I captured MTR between the Fall Foliage?
Anyway~Keep clicking because you take our breath away!!
P.S. I borrowed your elevation footage of Bolt~You were the only site I could find it at & I googled 3 sites. Should have came to you first :)
Have a wonderful day my friend!!
